Poynter and Snow believe that nearly any quality book with a clearly identifiable audience can be successfully self-published through "non-traditional" channels, other than bookstores and libraries. However, for those who want to pursue more traditional markets, you will probably need a wholesale distributor.
At most of our online resources, we provide links to Web sites. In this case, however, we recommend starting with a phone call, to get a more intimate feel for each company. Play dumb, and ask the same questions of several companies. Their answers may help you make a better choice.
We asked wholesalers and distributors what kind of books they want and do not want, to help you get started in the right direction. The results follow.

Bookpeople started with the small press movement in 1968 and is known throughout the industry for stocking small press books. They carry some 15,000 titles from more than 2,000 publishers to serve over 4,000 bookstores, health food outlets and women’s stores around the world. 50% of their customers are on the West Coast, 35% in the east and 15% outside the U.S. Sales amount to some $18 million annually. Bookpeople publishes a catalog and issues a monthly listing of new titles named Bookpaper.
Bookpeople accepts books on consignment, FOB Oakland, takes a 55% discount and pays 90 days after the books are shipped. Sales reports are sent to publishers each month.
