        *** B&T to Offer e-Books to Libraries

Baker & Taylor will soon offer e-Books to libraries. Next to
Ingram, B&T is the world's largest wholesale book distributor,
and is strong in library and academic markets, where e-books
make especially good sense.

Whether or not the initial system is perfect, the entry of B&T
into the e-Book market is evidence that e-publishing continues
to make slow-but-steady progress toward the mainstream of the
book world. The fact that B&T is strong in school and library
markets is also significant, since e-books are especially well
suited for environments like these.

Poynter and Snow have long maintained that e-Books will some-
day play an important role in the publishing industry, in spite
of current limitations. Stay tuned for future developments,
which will be covered here in the months ahead.

to our attention.

        *** Retailer Links Use ISBNs

(ISBN) to catalog it. The examples below point to our book,
ISBN 1-58832-002-2. Simply substitute your own ISBN to see how
your books are listed:

        *** B&N Requires Bowker Registration

According to a recent announcement from R.R. Bowker, "Your books
must be registered with Books In Print to be considered for
store placement with Barnes & Noble." See:

http://www.bowker.com/bowkerweb/Press_Releases/BarnesNoble.htm

The announcement continues: "Barnes & Noble has designated Books
In Print as the sole source of all bibliographic data for North
American publishers... All Barnes & Noble stores and BN.com will
use this bibliographic information."

The item above does NOT discuss how Bowker gathers data before
sending info to B&N. Major distributors such as Ingram and
Baker & Taylor send regular "title feeds" which can be used in
whole or part by other publishing institutions like Bowker to compile
databases about books in print.

Stay tuned for future updates concerning the practical effect of this
item for small and independent publishers.

If this text appears large and red, please check your e-mail settings to see if you need to disable "HTML" output, and use "Text Only" instead. Some e-mail software such as Microsoft Outlook may send e-mail messages in the same format (HTML) as a web page, which can cause problems for recipients who use other e-mail software.

File attachments (especially large ones) also cause problems for some recipients and should be avoided unless they are specifically requested by the recipient.

Finally, consider turning off "Word Wrap" when composing e-mail. An easy alternative to disabling word wrap is to use the Enter key to break each line after you type 60 to 80 characters, as we have done with the news items above.

If you are sending e-mail to the public, you want your e-mail messages to arrive simple and problem-free. The suggestions above will make your e-mail easier for everyone to read.
